Most holidays in Punta Cana begin at PUJ, but “Punta Cana” on a hotel booking can mean anything from a short ride to Cap Cana to a considerably longer trip north to Uvero Alto. This guide explains what to prepare before your flight, what happens after landing and how to choose transport for the final leg to your hotel or villa. It is written for first-time visitors, families, groups and travellers carrying more than a standard suitcase.
Punta Cana Airport at a glance
The airport’s full name is Punta Cana International Airport. Its codes are IATA: PUJ and ICAO: MDPC. It is in La Altagracia Province and serves the resort areas on the Dominican Republic’s east coast. For current flight information, maps and passenger services, use the official PUJ website.
Passenger flights use terminals A and B. Your ticket or airline app should show the right one; confirm it against the airport board on the day of travel.

Which airlines fly to PUJ, and how long is the flight
PUJ is one of the busiest leisure airports in the Caribbean and is served non-stop from North America, Latin America and Europe. Airlines operating scheduled or seasonal service to Punta Cana include:
- United States: American Airlines, Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, Frontier and Sun Country.
- Canada: Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, WestJet, Air Transat and Sunwing.
- Latin America and the Caribbean: Copa Airlines, Avianca, LATAM, Arajet and Sky High Dominicana.
- Europe: Iberia, Air Europa, Air France, Condor, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Neos and TUI.
Networks change every year and several of these routes are winter-only charters, so treat the list as an indication of who serves Punta Cana rather than a timetable. The carrier operating your booking is the only source for your own schedule and terminal.
Approximate non-stop flying times give a sense of how long the travel day is before the transfer even starts, which matters when you are deciding whether to arrange a driver in advance or work out ground transport on arrival:
| From | Approximate non-stop flight time |
|---|---|
| Miami | About 2 hours |
| Panama City | About 2 hours |
| Bogotá | About 3 hours |
| Atlanta | About 3 hours 15 minutes |
| New York (JFK / EWR) | About 4 hours |
| Toronto | About 4 hours |
| Boston | About 4 hours |
| Chicago | About 4 hours 15 minutes |
| Madrid | About 8 hours 30 minutes |
| Paris | About 9 hours |
| Frankfurt | About 9 hours 30 minutes |
Both terminals handle international passenger flights and airlines are not permanently tied to one of them. Rather than relying on which terminal a carrier used last season, check your boarding pass, the airline app and the PUJ board on the day you travel.
What to do before flying to the Dominican Republic
- Check the entry rules for your passport. Visa, transit and health requirements vary by nationality and can change. Start with your consulate and Dominican government sources.
- Complete the e-Ticket. It is the digital form used for immigration, customs and public-health authorities, not an airline ticket. Use the e-Ticket website and keep the QR code handy.
- Save the trip details. Check the names, flight number and accommodation address, then keep a copy you can open without a data connection.
- Check with the airline. Baggage allowance, check-in time and terminal information come from the carrier operating your flight.
- Send the details for your ride. Include the flight number, group size, child-seat request, large bags and the full hotel or villa address.
There is no single visa rule or airport-arrival time that fits every passenger. Your airline and the current government guidance for your nationality should take priority.
Arriving at PUJ: from the aircraft to your driver

- Follow airport signs and the instructions given by the crew and airport staff.
- Complete immigration with your passport and prepared e-Ticket.
- Collect your baggage and clear customs if required.
- Exit into the public arrivals area.
- Meet your driver at the agreed location, using the name or booking reference confirmed for your transfer.
Exit doors, queues and processing times vary with the flight and the day. If your flight changes or is delayed, use the contact details in your booking confirmation so the pickup can be adjusted.
What to expect in the arrivals hall
This is the part of the journey that surprises first-time visitors most, so it is worth knowing in advance. Between the customs exit and the doors you pass a run of commercial desks. Staff there are friendly, often wear branded shirts or lanyards, and may greet you by asking which hotel you are going to, whether you have arranged your transfer, or whether you would like to “register” or “confirm” your booking. Some offer a free ride, a free excursion or a discount card.
These are sales positions for tours, excursions and holiday-ownership presentations. They are not airport officials, they are not immigration or customs, and they are not the company you booked your transfer with. Nothing about a prearranged transfer needs to be registered, validated or confirmed with anyone in that area.
A few habits make the walk straightforward:
- Your prearranged driver waits in the public arrivals area, past the commercial desks, at the meeting point named in your confirmation. If someone approaches you before you reach the exit, that is not your driver.
- Identify your driver by the name or booking reference in your confirmation, not by the fact that someone knows your hotel. Hotel names are easy to guess from a flight.
- Keep your passport, e-Ticket and booking voucher to yourself. There is no reason to hand them to a desk in the arrivals hall.
- A polite “no thank you, my transport is arranged” is enough, and you can keep walking while saying it.
- If nobody is waiting, call the number on your confirmation before accepting a ride from anyone who approaches you.
None of this makes PUJ an unsafe airport; it is a well-run terminal and the desks are a normal commercial feature of a resort destination. It simply helps to know that the first people to say your hotel name out loud are usually not your driver.
Terminals, wayfinding and amenities
Maps for terminals A and B, along with information about shops, duty free, Wi-Fi, parking and passenger assistance, are available on the airport’s services page. If you need mobility assistance, arrange it with the airline in advance.
Connecting passengers should ask the airline whether bags must be collected or formalities repeated.
Money at PUJ: cash, cards and what to pay in
The national currency is the Dominican peso (DOP or RD$). In the Punta Cana and Bávaro resort areas US dollars are widely accepted alongside pesos, and cards are normal in hotels, restaurants and larger shops. Small independent stops, roadside vendors and tips are easier with cash.
ATMs and currency-exchange counters operate in the terminals and are listed on the airport’s services page. As at most airports, an exchange counter inside the terminal is rarely the best rate you will see on the trip, so many travellers change a modest amount on arrival for immediate needs and use ATMs or a card afterwards. If you plan to use cards, tell your bank you are travelling and check the foreign-transaction terms before you leave.
- Bring small notes. US$1, $5 and $10 notes are far more useful than a single large one for tips and small purchases.
- Check which currency a price is quoted in before agreeing to it. RD$ and US$ figures look similar on a printed card and differ by a large factor.
- Card terminals may offer to charge you in your home currency. Paying in the local currency is usually cheaper, because the alternative applies the terminal operator’s own conversion rate.
- Ask how your transport is paid before travel day. A prearranged transfer is normally settled through the booking rather than in cash at the roadside, and knowing that in advance avoids a misunderstanding when you land.
Tipping. Tipping is customary in the Dominican Republic but always discretionary, and it is not built into a transfer price unless your confirmation says so. Many travellers give their driver a small tip in dollars or pesos, a little more where there is help with heavy luggage, a late-night arrival or a long-distance journey. It is a thank-you, not a fee, and no driver should present it as one.
VIP, fast-track and lounge services
PUJ offers paid passenger services beyond the standard route through the terminal: VIP lounge access, fast-track assistance through arrival or departure formalities, and meet-and-assist products aimed at families, older passengers and travellers on tight connections. Availability, coverage and pricing are set by the airport and its service partners, so check the current options on the official services page or with your airline.
Two points matter when you combine one of these with a ground transfer. A fast-track product changes how quickly you move through the terminal, not where your driver may wait, so the meeting point in your booking confirmation still applies. And if you buy fast-track for arrival, tell your transport provider: coming out noticeably earlier than a normal flight would suggest is useful information for whoever is planning your pickup.
If you need assistance for reduced mobility rather than a premium product, that is arranged through the airline operating your flight and should be requested well before departure.

Recommended
Pre-booked private transfer
A direct journey from the arrivals area to your hotel, villa or resort, planned around your flight and luggage. Prestige vehicles include complimentary in-car Wi-Fi, which is especially useful after landing when mobile roaming can be expensive. Explore our services and booking options.
- Confirmed airport meeting plan
- Vehicle selected for passengers and bags
- Child seats and return journey arranged in advance
Self-drive
Rental car
A practical alternative when you are comfortable driving locally and need a vehicle throughout your stay.
- Check insurance, deposit and licence requirements
- Confirm parking at your accommodation
- Allow extra time for collection after landing
Taxi and public transport
Not our recommended choice for tourists. Fares, pickup points, vehicle availability, routes and connections may need to be resolved after landing. For a more predictable journey, pre-book a private transfer or use a reputable rental-car company.
Uber: Based on our airport team’s observations, pickup at PUJ can take 40 minutes or more, and drivers sometimes cancel shortly before collection.

Transfers from PUJ to popular resorts and areas
The Dominican Republic’s official tourism site gives useful planning estimates from PUJ: roughly 15 minutes to the Punta Cana and Cap Cana areas, 30 minutes to Bávaro, El Cortecito and Arena Gorda, and 45 minutes to Macao and Uvero Alto. These are area-level estimates, not guaranteed pickup times. The hotel entrance, traffic, weather and road conditions all affect the actual journey, so use the full destination address when asking for a quote.
Each figure is a rounded typical route to a representative central address in the destination. It is a planning reference rather than a guaranteed journey.
| Destination | Typical road distance | Typical drive time | What to confirm | Service page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Punta Cana / Puntacana Village | About 5 km | About 10 minutes | The exact hotel, terminal or villa | Punta Cana transfers |
| Cap Cana | About 13 km | About 20 minutes | The resort or residence and any access instructions | Cap Cana transfers |
| Bávaro / El Cortecito / Arena Gorda | About 25 km | About 30 minutes | The hotel address; this is an extended resort area | Bávaro transfers |
| Macao | About 32 km | About 35 minutes | The beach, hotel or private address | Request a Macao transfer |
| Uvero Alto | About 41 km | About 45 minutes | The exact resort or property entrance | Uvero Alto transfers |
| Bayahibe / Dominicus | About 70 km | About 55 minutes | The resort entrance and any requested stop | Bayahibe transfers |
| Casa de Campo | About 69 km | About 50 minutes | The villa, hotel or gate and any access instructions | Casa de Campo transfers |
| La Romana | About 78 km | About 1 hour | The district, hotel or residence address | La Romana transfers |
| Santo Domingo | About 190 km | About 2 hours 30 minutes | The district: city centre, Colonial Zone or another area | Santo Domingo transfers |
Typical road distances and drive times were checked against Google Maps driving routes on 8 August 2026. Traffic, road works and the exact hotel, villa or property entrance can change the result.

What determines the price of a transfer from PUJ
The most common question about airport transport is what it costs, and the honest answer is that the destination name is only one of the inputs. Two bookings to “Bávaro” can differ substantially because the vehicle, the hour and the group are different. These are the factors that actually move the number:
| Factor | Why it changes the price | What to tell us |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle class | The single biggest factor. Capacity, luggage space and comfort level differ across the fleet. | Passenger count and how many large cases you have |
| Distance and area | Cap Cana, Bávaro, Uvero Alto and Bayahibe are very different journeys, and long-distance routes are priced separately from resort-zone runs. | The full hotel, villa or residence address |
| One way or return | A round trip booked together is planned as one job rather than two unrelated ones. | Whether you want the airport return arranged now |
| Time of day | Very early departures and late-night arrivals need a driver scheduled outside normal hours. | Your flight number and scheduled arrival or departure time |
| Child seats | Seats have to be sourced, fitted and matched to the child, which is planning work before the day. | The age, height and weight of each child |
| Extra stops and special luggage | A supermarket stop, a second hotel or golf and sports equipment can change both the route and the vehicle needed. | Any stop you want and any oversized item |
Vehicle class is where most of the difference sits, so it helps to know what the group actually needs before comparing anything. Our fleet is organised by capacity:
| Class | Passengers | Typically suits |
|---|---|---|
| Mid Size SUV | Up to 2 | Couples and solo travellers with standard luggage |
| Full Size Suburban | Up to 4 | Small families and travellers wanting more luggage room |
| Premium Van | Up to 5 | Families who want space rather than a full-size van |
| H-350 Van | Up to 11 | Larger families and small groups travelling together |
| Large Sprinter Van | Up to 15 | Groups with substantial luggage or sports equipment |
| Bus | Up to 58 | Weddings, corporate arrivals and tour groups |
A common and expensive mistake is booking to the passenger count and forgetting the suitcases. A group of four with four large cases, hand luggage and a pushchair is a van booking, not an SUV booking, and it is much cheaper to establish that before travel day than in the car park.
We quote each journey rather than publishing one fixed rate, because the factors above change the answer more than the destination name does. A Suburban for two people arriving at midday in Cap Cana and a Sprinter for eleven people arriving at 02:00 in Uvero Alto are different jobs, and an averaged “from” price would be wrong for both.
Send the flight number, full address, passenger count, luggage and any child seats through the booking form and you get a written price for that specific journey, with the inclusions listed, before you commit to anything.
How to compare transfer quotes fairly
If you are weighing up several providers, compare what is inside the price rather than the headline figure. A quote is only cheaper if it covers the same things:
- Is it per vehicle or per person? A per-person figure for a family of five is a different product from a per-vehicle one.
- Is it private or shared? A shared shuttle that calls at four resorts before yours is not comparable to a direct journey.
- How much waiting time is included after landing, and what happens if immigration is slow or the flight is delayed?
- Are child seats included or charged, and are they guaranteed for your child’s size?
- Are tolls, fuel and airport access charges inside the price or added later?
- How is it paid, and in which currency? A price that becomes a cash negotiation on arrival is not really a price.
Golf clubs, surfboards, pushchairs and wheelchairs

Punta Cana attracts golfers, surfers, kitesurfers, divers and families, and all of them arrive with items that an estimate based on passenger numbers does not account for. Oversized luggage is straightforward when it is declared in advance and a genuine problem when it appears at the kerb. Tell us the item, the quantity and roughly the dimensions when you request the quote.
- Golf clubs. A travel bag takes the space of a large suitcase and cannot be bent into a boot. Four golfers with four bags and four cases need a van, not a Suburban. If you are heading for the courses around Punta Cana, Cap Cana or Casa de Campo, our guides to the top golf courses in the Dominican Republic and golf at Casa de Campo help with planning the trip around tee times.
- Surfboards and kitesurfing gear. Board length is what matters, so give it. Some boards travel in a van without difficulty and others need a specific vehicle.
- Diving equipment. Usually a question of weight and case count rather than shape, but tanks and heavy kit should still be mentioned.
- Pushchairs and travel cots. Say whether the pushchair folds flat and whether you want it accessible at the end of the journey rather than buried under the cases.
- Wheelchairs and mobility aids. Tell us whether it folds, whether it is manual or powered, and whether the passenger transfers to a vehicle seat. Assistance inside the terminal is arranged separately with your airline.
- Musical instruments, drone cases and professional equipment. These usually travel fine; they simply need counting in the luggage total.
The pattern is the same in every case: the vehicle is chosen from passengers plus luggage volume, and both need to be known before the driver is assigned.
How a return transfer to the airport works
Your return pickup depends on the hotel address, flight time, terminal and the airline’s check-in advice. Before leaving, check the terminal and baggage rules once more; those details are more useful than a generic “leave three hours early” rule.
If the flight, address or group changes, contact the provider through the booking details. Early-morning and night flights are best arranged in advance, with the pickup time agreed before travel day.
Parking, taxis, rental cars and other services
PUJ lists terminal parking, authorised taxis, Uber pickup areas and rental-car information in its Transportation section. The airport’s passenger-services page also covers Wi-Fi, food, duty free, family facilities and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private PUJ transfer cost?
The price depends on the exact resort or address, vehicle, passenger count, luggage and whether you need a one-way or return trip. Vehicle class usually matters more than the destination name. Compare PUJ transfer options, then use the booking form for an exact route quote.
How far is Punta Cana Airport from Bávaro?
A typical route from PUJ to the Bávaro, El Cortecito or Arena Gorda hotel strip is about 25 kilometres and 30 minutes. Cap Cana is typically about 13 kilometres away, Macao about 32 kilometres and Uvero Alto about 41 kilometres. Use the exact hotel address for a figure that applies to your booking.
Is the transfer private or shared?
Prestige focuses on private transfers reserved for your party, with the route and vehicle planned around your passengers, luggage and final destination.
Where will the Prestige driver meet me?
Follow the instructions in your booking confirmation after baggage claim and customs. The driver or airport representative will use clear Prestige identification and a sign with the lead passenger’s name.
Who are the people offering me a transfer in the arrivals hall?
The desks between customs and the exit sell tours, excursions and holiday-ownership presentations. They are not airport officials and not your booked transfer company, and a prearranged transfer never needs to be registered or confirmed with them. Your driver waits past those desks, in the public arrivals area, at the meeting point in your confirmation.
Should I pay in US dollars or Dominican pesos?
Both circulate in the resort areas, and cards work in most hotels and restaurants. Small notes are useful for tips and minor purchases. When paying by card, choosing the local currency is usually cheaper than letting the terminal convert for you.
Do I tip the transfer driver?
Tipping is customary but entirely discretionary, and it is not included in the transfer price unless your confirmation states otherwise. Many travellers give a small amount in dollars or pesos, particularly for heavy luggage, late-night arrivals or long journeys.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Prestige monitors the arrival information supplied with the booking and adjusts pickup coordination when the flight is delayed. Keep the booking contact details available in case the flight number or itinerary changes.
Can I request a child seat?
Yes. Include the child’s age, height and weight when requesting the ride so the suitable seat can be discussed in advance.
Can I bring golf clubs or a surfboard?
Yes, but tell us the number of items and their approximate size when you request the quote. Golf travel bags and boards change which vehicle class is suitable, and four golfers with clubs usually need a van rather than an SUV.
How do I find my terminal?
Start with your ticket or the airline app, then check the airport board on the day. Airlines are not permanently assigned to terminal A or B, so do not rely on what a carrier used last season.
Can I use Uber at PUJ?
PUJ lists Uber pickup areas for both terminals, but Prestige does not recommend that tourists rely on ride-hailing after a flight. Pickup directions, wait times, fares and vehicle availability are dynamic. A pre-booked private transfer is the more predictable choice; alternatively, rent a car from a reputable company if you are comfortable driving locally.
