Important Things to Ask When Checking Into a Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resort

Things to Ask When Checking

Into a Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resort

Seasoned travelers with more than a few all-inclusive stays under their belt know that quality can vary from resort to resort. Take Punta Cana, a gorgeous stretch of prime beaches and plenty of all-inclusive properties. While many of the resorts here have similar concepts and designs, differences tend to sneak up that may not be communicated during the booking process. And the bigger the resort, the harder it may be to snag a staff member to chat with, especially with substantial lines at the front desk. That’s why the check-in process is the best opportunity to get things straight.

Dominican Republic is the perfect destination to suit any traveler.

1. Do we need to make reservations for the restaurants (and is there a dress code?)

Nothing is more frustrating than being told you can’t get a table at an all-inclusive resort’s restaurant because you don’t have a reservation. Many high-end resorts, which features nine gourmet restaurants, don’t require dinner reservations, but not all operate the same way. Some resorts not only make reservations mandatory, but demand a strict morning time for bookings. Oh! And remember, ask if there’s a dress code, too.

2. What’s the entertainment schedule?

Getting a schedule of the resort’s nightlife and entertainment options when checking in isn’t always a guarantee. If this is a key part of your experience, ask the front desk for a rundown of what’s happening that week. It also doesn’t hurt to ask their opinion on what the best shows are.

3. Which water sports and day trips are included?

Most mid-range tropical all-inclusive resorts will include non-motorized water sports (think kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkeling) with the rate. Some, however, still charge an obnoxious fee or require strict time limits to an hour per day, or worse, per week.

4. What’s the tipping policy?

Not only is this a key area of difference between cultures, it’s also an area of variance between resorts. Some all-inclusives automatically add a 10 percent (or more) service charge with the rate, so ask the front desk while checking in. Unfortunately, many of the folks who work at these resorts are paid a very low wage and depend on tips for income.

5. Are minibar items and room service free?

It’s worth asking. At the very least, many rooms have free bottled water. Some even offer full minibar access with free soda, beer, and snacks; coffeemakers are also provided.

6. Is there an upgrade option?

Depending on the resort, availability, and time of year, an upgrade can be obtained for a nominal fee. Find out from the front desk what the options and benefits are of moving up.

Punta Cana, the crown jewel of Caribbean beach destinations, does not disappoint. A seemingly endless list of resorts offers all-inclusive luxury alongside affordable options to suit any type of traveler, with hotels ranging from family-friendly to opulent.

Some of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic

Back in 2008, the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Tourism glossed the DR as the country “that has it all.”

The country is still sticking with that slogan and it’s easy to see why:

  • Year-round tropical climate.
  • Lush coastline with 250 miles of beaches.
  • Historic cities and culture.
  • Mountains.
  • Waterfalls.
  • Golf courses.
  • We could go on.

PLAYA MORON

Is one of the gorgeous Samana Peninsula´s smaller beaches. Visitors have a good chance to spotting a humpback whale during the January-March mating season.

EL SALTO DEL LIMON WATERFALL, SAMANÁ

It´s a mile-and-a-half trek through the jungle to get to the top of the cascades. The reward is the 130-feet-high El Salto del Limon, which flows into a natural pool that´s great for swimming.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARIA LA MENOR

Dating to 1512, the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor in Santo Domingo is widely considered the oldest cathedral in the Americas. Gothic architecture, 500-year-old mahogany doors and the former site of Christopher Columbus´ tomb all wow visitors.

PUERTO PLATA ``TELEFERICO``

A popular excursion in Puerto Plata is the ``teleferico`` tour. Panoramic views of the city and ocean can be seen from the cable cars. A massive statue of Jesus Christ stands at the top of Mount Isabel de Torres.

LOS HAITISES

The protected forest of Los Haitises has limited road access. It´s become a popular eco-tourism destination, with most visitors arriving by boat. A variety of geographical landscapes are found in the region.

ALTOS DE CHAVON, LA ROMANA

Altos de Chavon is a massive replica 16th-century Mediterranean village. It´s home to a cultural center, an archeological museum and an amphitheater, but just walking around is impressive.

BAYAHIBE BEACH

Bayahibe Beach has a bar and a lighthouse and not much else, but it´s known as one of the nicest places in the country to watch a sunset.

JUANILLO BEACH, CAP CANA

Juanilo Beach is a calm, secluded public beach on the country's East Coast.

HEROES DE LA RESTAURACION MONUMENT, SANTIAGO

The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration of the Republic is an eight-story structure dedicated to Dominican soldiers who fought the final War of Independence against Spain.

Santo Domingo – NIGHTLIFE

SANTO DOMINGO

the perfect place for an alfresco meal surrounded by hundreds of years of history.

Santo Domingo | has it all

Santo Domingo is the largest, most animated, cosmopolitan and people-friendly city in the Caribbean and Central America. Avoid peak hour traffic, and you are in a metropolis that has it allThe Colonial City in Santo Domingo‬ is the perfect place for an alfresco meal surrounded by hundreds of years of history.

SANTO DOMINGO NIGHTLIFE

Some of its architecture can be stunning. The city lit up at night is gorgeous in both historic and modern areas. The lighting of the Colonial City takes you back to the 16th century, but in the city centerit is 21st century all the way.

Most nightspots are located in on Winston Churchill, Gustavo Mejía Ricart, Abraham Lincoln, Roberto Pastoriza, Sarasota or Rómulo Betancourt, Venezuela, on the Malecón, and the many streets of the Colonial City. Many are open-air terraces and bars for people watching and easy socializing. Big hotels have their music spots, such as L’Azotea at the Dominican Fiesta, Las Palmas at the Hotel Santo Domingo or Merengue Bar at the Jaragua.

For Latin music dancing, Lucia 203 and Onno’s are popular in the Colonial City. Serious dancers are drawn to the Avenida Venezuela. In the city, upscale discos boast that they play the same music that is being heard at the top nightspots abroad.

Acclaimed performers are booked all year for the Teatro Nacional or Bellas Artes halls. However, more casual theaters are located in the Colonial City such as Hard Rock Café facing Columbus Park and Casa de Teatro, the off-Broadway hang out in Santo Domingo, where the next Juan Luis Guerra will perform first. The small Guloya and Las Máscaras theaters stage comedy, drama and other plays all year long at their Colonial City address.

Dating back to the 16th century, the Ruinas de San Francisco, the first monastery in the Americas, is today famous for the live Bonyé musical entertainment that attracts hundreds of people at sunset on Sundays. Hostos St. between Emiliano Tejera & Restauración streets.

Plaza de España is the magical large plaza fronting the Alcazar de Colón. Restaurants and bars line the top of the steps overlooking the Alcazar. On Fridays and Saturdays watch folklore shows sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism.

Compared to US and European cinemas, movie theaters are a bargain in Santo Domingo. Those located at the new malls feature the latest technology.

Bayahibe – More than a fishing village

BAYAHÍBE

a charming village

Bayahibe | More than a fishing village

Bayahíbe is a town in the Dominican Republic, located about 10 miles (16 km) east of La Romana on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. Founded as a fishing village in 1874 by Juan Brito and his family, who came from Puerto Rico, the town is now a tourist destination.

Tourism

Bayahíbe Beach, a public beach, is located less than a mile from the town center, and Dominicus Beach is in about three miles distance. Bayahíbe serves as an embarkation point for boat trips to Saona Island, a thinly inhabited island with extensive beaches located in a national park. In the vicinity of Bayahíbe and Dominicus Beach, numerous large resorts in Bayahibe are located.

Scuba Diving & other watersports

Scuba diving is probably the most common tourist attraction in Bayahíbe – Bayahíbe being the best location for scuba in the Dominican Republic. There are numerous scuba diving shops scattered around the main beach that take scuba divers to the many dive sites around the area. There are over 20 official dive sites located near Bayahíbe and all are accessible from the dive boats in the area. There are three shipwrecks in the area including Atlantic Princess, St George and Coco. Bayahíbe benefits from the crystal clear, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea which makes it perfect for many water sports including snorkeling and stand up paddle boarding. Deep sea fishing is another popular activity.
